Giant Fruit Bats on Tabuk Island

A fisherman carefully removes his precious catch from his net, oblivious to the thousands of bats flying to their feeding grounds north of Palompon from their day sleeping roosts on Tabuk Island.

We rode in this boat from the Tabuk Island Lookout to the north side of the island.

We passed healthy mangrove trees and glided through the shallow water until the boat could go no more.

We left the boat and the guide led us along the shadowed trail between the mangrove restorations. Within a few hundred feet we stopped and were directed to look at a tree ahead, the northernmost tree with sleeping bats.
